Every part knows its path: End-to-end control and traceability with the Cosmino Digital Twin

Digital Twins make the MES on the shop floor independent of database and network availability

The Cosmino Digital Twin is a central component of the Manufacturing Execution System (MES) Cosmino Panteo. Every workstation—and in single-part production, even every individual workpiece—receives a Digital Twin that provides all essential manufacturing information directly on the shop floor. It loads material flow rules and master data from the database but operates largely independently of it during the production process. This ensures that all relevant data, process and quality rules, material specifications, and traceability information are always highly available and accessible without delay.

Another advantage: machine controllers, data collection devices, visualization tools, and third party solutions can communicate directly with the Digital Twin via the REST interface. This makes it the central hub of the production environment.

Continuously Controlled Production Process with Full Transparency

For some customers, Cosmino already controls the entire material flow using the Digital Twin – from the birth of each individual workpiece to the finished product:

  • Variant-dependent rules for each component, such as processing instructions for machines, employees, and assembly tools, are automatically controlled and monitored,
  • Transport systems deliver the parts directly to the next workstation,
  • Coordination with material supply ensures that production only takes place when the required materials are actually available or can be fed into the line on time,
  • Rework loops are digitally supported – including clear instructions for disassembly, repair, and reassembly,
  • Every station and activity in the material flow is fully documented – ensuring complete traceability,
  • Cosmino always knows the current production progress and the remaining tasks.

The result: A continuously controlled production process with high process reliability – and complete documentation for every individual item.



The Digital Twin for Each Workpiece Contains the Complete Documentation of the Manufacturing Process

Especially for traceability down to batch size 1, a Digital Twin for each indiviual processing unit is highly beneficial. This brings additional advantages:

  • The Cosmino Digital Twin serves on the shop floor as a data platform for all recorded and pending work steps – this status can be accessed at any time through various tools.
  • In the end complete process and quality documentation for each individual part is available via its Cosmino Digital Twin.

This way, every workpiece becomes an information carrier of its own production history. This reduces errors, simplifies quality verification, and lays the foundation for truly transparent production.
